Dental Implants May Be The Choice For You

Posted on

When you are missing a tooth, you can feel ashamed of how you look. You may wonder what you can do to fix the problem so that you don't have to walk around with a gap in your smile anymore. One of the things you can do is to talk to your dentist about getting a dental implant:

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a two part thing. They consist of the post and then the tooth. The post is a root replacement. It goes right down into the socket that the root of your tooth was in. Then your dentist will put an artificial tooth on the post. The tooth will match your other teeth in color and will be the proper shape. You will be able to eat with it in and no one will be able to clock you. Getting the implant can actually take some time. It's not something that you get immediately.

The Process

Getting your implant starts with getting the bone in your jaw evaluated. If it has been some time since you had the tooth out, you may have had some bone loss. If that has happened, you may have to have a bone graft so that there is enough bone to successfully secure the implant. If you need to have a bone graft, you will have to wait for a few weeks so that the bone will start to heal and then you can have the implant placed. If you don't need one, then the dentist can go ahead and put the implant into the socket. Again, you are going to have to wait a few weeks for your bone to heal and grow around the post. You need to have that post secure before you try to have your replacement tooth put in because if you don't, the post will shift and can cause more damage to your jaw and lead to the implant failing. Once the bone has healed properly, the dentist will put your replacement tooth on. You should visit your dentist periodically so that they can make sure that your implant isn't failing and that it is staying where it should be.

If you have a gap in your smile, you may not feel good about yourself. However, there are things that you can do. One of them is to get a dental implant which will look just like your regular tooth. Contact a dental office like Tijeras Dental Service for more information and assistance.
